Plot – Massive Spoilers:
Four segments from the maker of Tumbling Doll of Flesh and Women’s Flesh: My Red Guts featuring different kinds of suicide.
1. This one’s framed like a voyeur-cam as we watch a young woman who hasn’t been to college for over a month, is in need of money and has just moved into a new place. She finds a gun left behind by the previous tenant, fucks around with it for a while, realizes it’s real with bullets, gets high – it’s a bad one – then calls a friend and begs her to come over.
Death type: Spur of the moment.
2. A married woman has managed to squander away a huge pile of money and now her husband has had it with her and offers to pay off half her debt, but wants a divorce.
Death type: Planned because no other option seems meaningful.
3. An actress chats with her director just before her upcoming shoot – a seppuku performance.
It’s a comfortable conversation between the two. He’s at ease with the art he believes he’s about to produce. She’s happy that, of all the crew, at least he doesn’t appear to be squeamish about what’s to unfold.
Despite the conversation, he doesn’t get emotionally attached to her, but is respectful at the end of the performance – announcing in a hushed tone that it’s finally complete.
Death type- seemingly voluntary.
4. A doll-couple, one of whom was depressed for some reason, are brutally assaulted.
Finally, there’s a promo for Tumbling…
The doll act appears to tie in elements from the three previous human segments – depression/pill, hanging, eyeballs/a-crew. So maybe the director was trying to prove that while he was treating the viewer to the lascivious deaths of women, he was also being sympathetic – like they were all dolls (puppets), dressed and shaped by others and circumstances to always be ready for a performance.
I don’t know if it’s the nostalgia of the bad VHS-rip quality, the ability to rewatch this with subs this time, (might be inaccurate as I don’t speak nor understand Japanese – made them with a combination of software and guesswork). Anyway, this was a great watch and is recommended for most users here, unless Jap-gore isn’t really your thing.

I thought it was a good head and span above the usual nihilistic no budget Japanese gore film. The acting is good and there’s a strange poignancy to every segment except (for me) maybe the second. Your subtitles are pretty good, they don’t follow the dialogue quite literally but the general sense is all there. I gave it four stars. Of the other two related films I only saw Tumbling Doll of Flesh, which was good for the genre but purely a voyeuristic thing that is there just for the violence. There’s something more to this one, simple as it is.

I feel like she was not happy abput her guts being dark purple OR maybe there is a god and he was like “so you wanna ser your insides before ypu go try this….” Like punishment. Its funny happy she got her wish i was worried she was gonna go before seeing her own guts!!!

Excellent choice for anyone who’s enjoyed Anaru’s other epic movies. Only a fat old retard who wouldn’t know taste if it vomited in his mouth would be critical (case in point below).
The third segment was surprisingly good.
The whole setup—with their everyday dialogue, thoughts on death and the moment of dying, the uncertainty when the time came to die, and so on—gave the film an unsettling edge.
Her acting was also good and convincing.
“Tumbling Doll of Flesh” (1998) and “Women’s Flesh: My Red Guts” (1999) both made it in to my “Old Mother Hubbard’s 25 Picks for WORST Films on EUM” list so, as you can tell, I’m not a big fan of this director’s work (Tamakichi Anaru). I like “Suicide Dolls” (1999) maybe just a cunt hair more than the other 2 and it would more than likely not end up in my “Worst Of” list. The first 3 vignettes have no musical soundtrack which is appealing to me. I like movies with no musical soundtrack (“7 Days” (2010) is a good example). The first 2 vignettes were sort of a mixture of boring, interesting and strange. The third vignette was too silly to be taken seriously. After not hearing a musical soundtrack in the first 3 vignettes, the forth vignette (with the super shitty puppetry/stop-motion) gave me a headache with it’s loud and abrasive techno noise and was by far the least successful out of the four vignettes. Overall it is a somewhat depressing and bleak film that only takes a hour of your life so I’m going to go straight up the middle with this one and give it just a cunt hair over 2 and a half stars. I just recently reviewed “Red, White & Blue” (2010). I’ve seen it many times. Noah Taylor is excellent as Nate. I gave it 5 stars. I like this a lot, it might not be as bloody as Anaru’s other works, but this film shows female despair so raw, so bleak…
