Apartment (1996)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

AKA: L’appartement
Year: 1996
Directed by: Gilles Mimouni
Starring: Vincent Cassel (Max), Monica Bellucci (Lisa), Romane Bohringer (Alice), Sandrine Kiberlain (Muriel), Jean-Philippe Écoffey (Lucien)
Country: France, European Cinema
Language: French (Eng Subs)
Runtime: 01:51:45
Genres: Mystery

Plot – Spoilers:
Max appears to be in the prime of his life. His career is taking off, he’s getting married soon to his boss’s sister and the boss thinks he’s hot shit. While meeting with clients at a cafe, he fleetingly sees an ex whom he broke up with in odd circumstances. Seeing her brings a flood of memories and he becomes obsessed with finding her, even canceling his business trip to Japan.

L’appartement veers sometimes into romcom territory and is even a bit silly at times. It is however an important film in modern French cinema for its style and noirish touches.

L’appartement was remade in English as Wicker Park.

Putting “The Apartment” on Effed Up Movies is like putting “Crazy Murder” (2004), a story about a mentally deranged homicidal maniac that eats his own shit, on the Lifetime Network. It just doesn’t make sense to me. The remake “Wicker Park” (2004), also here on EUM, is almost the exact same except for the end.

“The Apartment” is a story about love and unrequited love, straight out of a Harlequin Romance novel, involving several participants. I’m going to go straight up the middle with this one and give it just a cunt hair over 2 and a half stars and let me tell you why. The production values, the acting, the script, etc. are all great for a romance film. If Alice had gone berserk in the café and pulled out a revolver and shot Lucien, several patrons and then blew her own head off, this would have been a 5 star film for me.

Although I have not seen this in awhile, the ending kind of sucked, had it not been for Alice’s lies Lisa might still be been alive

This movie is perfect, it shows the selflessness & selfishness of love at the same time, and how fate & destiny intertwine. The ending makes this film deserve its spot on effedupmovies.com.

I love film noir, and this was classic film noir – from the filtered photography, stylish outfits, to the mysterious music and how good looking are the actors! Major plot twist – wasn’t expecting the ending, but liked it.

Not acting at all? Cassel and Bellucci have such strong chemistry between them than transpires to the screen trough their private lives imo
