Cruising (1980)

Option 1Can't Watch?

Wait 30secs. Movie still not playing? Click the "Can't Watch?" tab.

If the movie didn't load, it means you are being blocked by a security service we use. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Click this first

A new tab will open and a basic security check like a captcha will be performed. After completing the check, close that page and return here.

Refresh this page. Wait 30 secs. The movie should load and you can just hit play.

If it still doesn't play, Click here to watch the movie

The movie should now start playing in a new tab of your browser or begin downloading to your device. This option has the minor disadvantage that English-language movies with optional subtitles in the movie player will not include these subs with this method.

The new system here has been designed keeping in mind even people with low internet speeds sub-8mbps. Even if you have a really bad connection, you should still be able to watch the movie without any issues if you:
Start the movie. Pause it. Wait for 30-45 seconds. Start playing again.

This 'Can't Watch' method really only works if it's your specific device/browser that's interfering with the player. There is no real advantage of speed here. Or if there is a temp network glitch or read lag from the server disk.

If you're still having problems, try using 'Incognito mode' in your browser. On iPhones, especially older ones, use Chrome instead of Safari. Might help.

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the newly opened tab is not an ad popup asking you to download some software or whatever. Close any such popups and don't download any software - those are ads. Nothing is needed to be done by you other than to complete the security check which is often automated.

AKA:
Directed by: William Friedkin
Starring: Al Pacino (Det. Steve Burns), Paul Sorvino (Cpt. Edelson), Richard Cox (Stuart Richards), Karen Allen (Nancy), Don Scardino (Ted), Joe Spinell (Simone), Mike Starr (Cop), Jay Acovone (Skip)
Country: USA; Effed Up American Movies
Language: English (Optional Eng subs)
Runtime: 1:41:50
Genres: Detective-Mystery-Cops, Gay-CrossDressing, Serial Killer, (Loosely) Based on a True Story

Plot – Spoilers:
In grimy NY, someone’s killing gay men, especially those into the more hardcore scene. Det. Burns, a seemingly heterosexual cop is tasked with going undercover to unravel the killer’s identity. Burns doesn’t hesitate too much when the assignment is laid out and later that night, lying in bed with his girlfriend, muses, “There’s a lot about me you don’t know.”

Burns begins hanging out at gay clubs where he is treated to a cavalcade of male bodies. He takes a break from time to time to fuck his girlfriend but leaves the fate of their relationship to her on whom he places the onus of stopping him from sinking down a manhole. Initially supportive, she eventually tires of his strange secretive ways and the relationship breaks down. But Burns doesn’t seem too affected, as he finds himself no longer sinking, but rather climbing down the manhole.

Based on a book but also loosely based by Friedkin on a series of unsolved killings, Cruising begins by focusing on a couple of Taxi Driver-like cops prowling through the alleys of NY and who are as much on edge as everyone else, but abandons this angle once Burns enters the scene. The movie was controversial at the time for its wanton depiction of gay clubs and also probably because it was considered a bold choice by Pacino who was just hitting his prime.

This is the original theatrical version which is slightly different from the version that is on the DVD. The opening sequence is different. Before the second killing the killer says “Who’s here? I’m here. You’re here” twice instead of once like it is on the DVD. When Ted is talking to Steve/John (Al Pacino) in the coffee shop telling him about Gregory coming home there is jazz music playing in the background. In the DVD version there is no music. The music is different in a few places like when Steve/John is looking at the yearbook photos. Al Pacino’s famous dancing segment is purposely blurred and jumpy on the DVD but clean on this version. When Stuart Richards is walking into the school with his books and Steve/John (Al Pacino) is sitting on the railing, you probably didn’t notice him in this version. In the DVD version there is an effect to clearly show Steve/John sitting on the railing. At about 01:15:40 Steve/John is reading 2 letters that Stuart wrote for his father. They flash by so fast that it is hard to read them. I suggest you pause when the letters come up. The first letter is strange but the second letter is really bizarre. William Friedkin was asked to direct the film “Cruising” twice but he was not interested. He became interested when Paul Bateman, a radiology technician who had appeared in “The Exorcist” (1973) during the squirm-inducing scene where Regan undergoes a spinal, was put in prison… Read more »

Just watched this movie the other night and thought it was pretty good

There’s a lot of gay club sex scenes and their leather outfits are so sexy

Don’t know whether Al Pacino’s character Steve Burns is gay or not

The part where he gets slapped by the random black guy is random and funny

Rating – 7.5 / 10
