The Traces of Death series from the ’90s was an attempt to outdo Faces of Death that had included staged scenes.
But the first one in the series lacked its famous predecessor’s budget and this shows up in the lower production and crappy music. What’s better here though is the authenticity – barring the lion-mauling scene.
Traces of Death 1 includes accidents, autopsies, surgeries including gender-reassignment, embalming and some notorious incidents like the press-conference suicide of Robert Budd Dwyer.

Way too much medical footage. I was soooo bored by the 3rd autopsy. Also, why did they put Bud Dwyer’s suicide on a loop?
Some of these clips aren’t even of or about death at all. Also, where was the narrator through most of it? At least FOD looked and sounded like actual films.

I mean it’s not a PHYSICAL transformation it’s an imitation at best. No man can become a woman and vice versa because of biology and nature. Other than that, cool doc.
Some very striking imagery for sure, but the music really does ruin some of the scenes. The brain surgery and the gender reassignment songs felt like I was fighting a boss in some 90s video game or someshit. Also evil knievel getting hit in the balls made me lmao, that was random af. Other than that the film achieves what it wanted to, and it is a very authentic experience so it’s worth the watch imo.

Okay I haven’t watched the full thing yet, but with everything saying they’re outdoing Faces by keeping only real onlooks, I’m sorry but that simply isn’t true. The lion scene is beyond obviously fake.
If you’ve ever actually seen a lion attack vs when lions are playing. you can tell. they don’t jump around like this and they get absolutely covered in blood. Along with the fact that the meat they’re shown eating toward the end isn’t even bloodied?
they aren’t vampires. They cant like, drain the shit. sorry to burst anyone’s bubble but these are clearly acting lions(who i have seen in person and can be very convincing but are ultimately sweethearts) who were given some grocery store steaks.
I actually like the music. It somehow makes the footage more creepy and disturbing.
the voiceover was fucked up. what the fuck were they thinking speaking like this behind victims? apart from this, most videos are medical and informative rather than shocking. when you see cartels beheading videos this just doesnt do it lmao
Most of this was just medical footage. I guess gore was harder to acquire back then but compared to what we have today, I give this a solid 6/10

Finally! Ever since I completed the original Faces of Death series, I’ve been hunting for these, solely because of their authenticity. This has scenes that made me, a hardened gorehound, flinch. And this is coming from someone who has seen A Serbian Film. This shit is HARDCORE. And I don’t regret seeing it for a second (barring the scenes of animal torture). That said…if you can’t handle VERY graphic, and VERY real violence…turn back now. You are not ready for this.
Also, the soundtrack fucking slaps.
This is great! But there’s too much boring autopsy stuff that takes up a lot of time.

Yes, it most certainly lacks in the budget department but not in the area of authenticity. When Faces of Death came out in the late 70s, there was a push on to grab a hold of this market, and it was easy enough to do. Just provide REAL content. And thus the Traces of Death and the Faces of Gore series were born. I’m sure there are a few others in there that I’m unaware of. MDPOPE also took the liberty of borrowing/using a number of clips from these movies and added the really twisted sexual aspects like 2 Girls and One Cup… The race was on to out do one another until someone in the 90s said enough is enough and came down on the websites like Rotten.com and Ogrish.
These same people are back now censoring internet content much more vigorously. Call them what you will, but these people are the real Nazi’s of today. “If I don’t like what you have to say, or show us, no one is going to see it – for the benefit of society.” And we all know how this turns out, don’t we?

Thanks for the upload! I’ve always been curious about Traces of Death after seeing Faces. I know that this movie/series had a lower budget and that explains why the music and voice-over are so low quality, but I wish there was more explanation in some parts. Like, what am I looking at here? For example, the bit with the pigs being tortured with fire- was that part of an experiment to study 3rd and 4th degree burns? Maybe someone who knows a lot of lore on this can help me out. It’s still fascinating to me to see real footage of these events in an era prior to Ogrish or Liveleaks.
Despite the overblown narration that falls down on actually providing context, there are still neat touches to this one, like the montage of eyes! One really needs to treasure these weirdly beautiful moments, because in the very next moment you get brain dissection to Sega Genesis music… In fact, a lot of this movie is not so much about death as it is going through med or mortuary school. There’s more surgery here than I anticipated. On that note: Damn, they gave that trans girl the works. Top and Bottom surgery in one go? Shiiiiiiiiiiid.

I love gore but there is just something fucked to me about fucking up your privates. IT FUCKING HURTS I feel it when I see it! I don’t enjoy that at all..
