And because it’s longer, running almost 2 1/2 hours, it can afford to explore in more detail the breakdown of her kindly nature in the increasingly merciless WW2 Japan, as she loses the ability to indulge luxuries like valor, honor and nationalism.
There are two prominent live-action adaptations of Grave of the Fireflies, and this one, despite its obviously limited budget, is probably the more enjoyable one. That said, if you love the anime film, you should probably watch the other adaptation too.

Since I had already seen the 1988 animated version and the 2008 version before this one, I already knew the story, so when the great grand daughter found the candy box in the trunk a hard lump manifested in my throat and my eyes welled up. There are some flaws in the film. The special effects during the bombing raids weren’t great but something that really bothered me is how they were living right near the pond/river. When Setsuko was sitting by the tree you could actually see fish coming to the surface in the water. I’m just thinking outside the box here but maybe a stick with some thread and hook with a worm attached to it so you could try to catch some fish? Anywho, besides the flaws, the film is beautiful and extremely well acted. It’s so painfully sad that your heart physically hurts when you watch it. I curled up in to the fetal position and I was a blubbering, inconsolable mess for almost 4 hours after watching this (I’m exaggerating, but I was sad). 5 stars.
I was wondering what was it that kept hassling my mind in this film…yep.. Little girl’s perfect teeths. No girl in that age has that perfect teeths. And that’s why her smile looks so unnatural. Minor matter maybe, but once you see it , you can not unsee it.
This was an interesting interpretation of the original film, telling it from another point of view and humanizing the cruel aunt. She still sucks for what she did, but it was still interesting!
