Plot – Spoilers:
Set in an Ohio town a few years after a destructive tornado, Gummo captures the despondent lives of some of the residents, particularly the teenagers.
Tummler and Solomon are friends, more importantly, business partners – they kill cats and sell them. There isn’t much else of a plot. Instead, through short vignettes we get a sense of the mood in the town. There are scenes of animal cruelty, underage sexual activity including Chloe Sevigny who plays the oldest teen sister kissing a young mute in a bunny hat and Solomon having a meal while in a dirty tub.
Depending on your personal experiences, you will see the characters in Gummo as pathetic lowlifes or feel a sense of empathy and sympathy for them.

I’m not a big fan of Harmony Korine though he has made some decent films. “Gummo” is of the random variety with a bunch of different scenes of weird people doing mostly boring shit but it’s somewhat entertaining to watch for some reason. This is my 3rd or 4th time seeing it. It’s OK. 3 stars.

This soundtrack is sick SF! I graduated high school the same year this was released. Chloë Sevigny seems to do well with these genres. Never knew this was released till now. It’s so real. I’m from that kinda town and it’s exactly spot on!

I knew these people. Spent my young adult life living in a southern, white trash side of town. I drove people around while they dealt meth, bought meth, and did every other drug around. I have yet to see a better visual depiction of what that was like. Watching this film is a walk down memory lane for me.

When I saw the photo of the movie I was expecting to see something along the line of Tom Browning’s Freaks. The boy on the cover doesn’t look normal. However what a shock that Soloman does really look like that and he really doesn’t look all that weird.

AMAZING MOVIE! has that nostalgic country vibe but an unsettling feeling too with the singing at the start. chloe sevigny being in this film makes it even better.

This is the kind of movie I was expecting, violent with no filter/censorship. The soundtrack is amazing Sleep, Mystifier, Eyehategod, Bethlehem are among the good bands featuring. The most shocking part is it shows part of reality with the racism, sexual assault, violence towards animals, etc.
If you like movies like Spun, Ken Park, Kids I recommend watching it.
If you want to see a young Teller eating spaghetti in a filthy bathtub, you’ve come to the right place. Sadly, no magic card tricks.

Its fucked up
Its a really fucked up movie. It features rape, pedophilia, and even underage sex. when the kids aren’t killing cats they’re getting stoned, and there’s a few parts that I’ll never forget. The main one is where a drunk man is confessing to a small man about how he’s gay. He brings up that when his mom was pregnant, he used to roll marbles on her stomach. If it hit the navel he’d get 5$ but if he hit her arm he’d get hit with a hairbrush. This movie is traumatizing but I love this movie.

As someone who grew up around this, this feels like poor people porn for well off folk. I’ll let the well-off folk downvote my comment to make themselves feel superior, which is why they like this movie.
I remember being in my native Chile in the 90s, laying on the couch bored as hell in hot summer days with all my pals gone somewhere and listening to Mellow Gold by Beck which got me even more bored (mind, it was not depression, it was just pure utter boredom).
After watching this (2025,anyone?) ,all of these vibes I got from those days came back to my head like a flashback. I’m saying this in a haunting way and even romantic as, as Kurt Cobain would put it, “I miss the comfort in being sad”.
If Mellow Gold by Beck could be a movie,.it’d be this. I personally think it’s a masterpiece.
i remember watching this movie with my gf couple years back, the cat scenes were a bit shocking to me, but the thing that sticked with me the most was me and her enjoying that one heavy metal song somewhere in the movie, speakers full volume, just headbanging a bit on her bed, good times
