Plot – Spoilers:
A small town cop Hazel is having a hard time dealing with the loss of her baby and stumbles through her daily life. A shot in the arm arrives when an old woman in the neighbourhood is found with her throat slit and an expression on her face like she had been trying to model for an Edvard Munch painting. Soon, more bodies are found with similar expressions of terror and grief and a Christian angle to the killing spree begins to emerge.
A completely unremarkable Hollywood job, that doesn’t dare go too far in any direction for fear of unsettling the target audience.
I like big budget movies with top notch actors and ace production standards. Susan Sarandon is a big time movie star and there is a reason for that. She’s good at what she does. I thought she did a great job in the film “Stepmom” (1998) too.
“The Calling” is a fairly enjoyable watch but the way they discover Simon the perp is just so preposterous that it is hard to take this movie seriously. Simon is kind of creepy though. The scene in the hospital with Hazel (Sarandon) and her mom (Ellen Burstyn – famous for playing Reagan’s mom in “The Exorcist” (1973)) is so corny that I thought I was going to vomit. I’ve seen many films with Ellen Burstyn in them and this IMHO has be one of her weakest performances. I’ll go straight up the middle on “The Calling” and give it just a cunt hair over 2 and a half stars.
One of Ellen Burstyn’s best performances was in a TV movie called “Surviving: A Family In Crisis” (1985) when she played the part of “Tina Brogan” with co-stars Molly Ringwald, River Phoenix, Heather O’Rourke, Marsha Mason and Paul Sorvino. Watch with a full box of tissues. I’ve seen grown men weep uncontrollably while viewing that one.

Terrific! Intriguing story, but the sheer class of the film is in the cinematography, Even within the first few minutes it is clear that this is being filmed by someone dedicated to the art of thoughtfully composing every scene for a 21:9 format.
I’m not particularly partial to Bijou featuring Susan Sarandon, though her performance was persuasive in ‘Dead Man Walking’ (1995) along with Sean Penn. I’m only 20 minutes into this film, but I feel predisposed to grant it my attention perhaps another time. Albeit, I am appreciative of Ellen Burstyn and Donald Sutherland, predominantly so.
Pretty slow, but whatever. I guess the acting was pretty good. 3 stars sounds about right.

I am Catholic. I have never in my 72 years been in a Catholic Church that didn’t have a crucifix prominently displayed on or near the alter. There is a bare cross in the funeral scene.
