Jong-goo is a police sergeant who lives with his daughter, wife and mother-in-law in a small South Korean village. A dedicated family man, Jong-goo receives a call one morning about a double-murder. On reaching the murder site, the police find the killer in a trance and covered with strange sores. The murders were brutal and there is evidence of dark rituals and worship involved.
Over the next few days, more strange sightings and horrific murders occur, and the previously-detached Jong-goo is drawn deeper into the investigation when his daughter starts behaving strangely.
The Wailing is a horror movie that prefers to keep its plot vague but provides enough biblical references for those familiar with the book to draw their own conclusions.
2 hours and 36 minutes is a long time to devote to a film, especially a shitty film. This is a goofy Asian comedy/horror film that follows bumbling cops as they search for a demonic killer. The main cop always has that stupid, dumfounded, “Ah-so?” look on his face. After an hour of goofy comedy the film tries to get serious but it’s too late. The story and acting are so weak that it is unsalvageable. The child actor that played the daughter was terrible.
Unfortunately, when I first came to EUM, I saw 3 or 4 Asian films that were goofy and stupid like this one and it gave me a bad first impression of Asian films. Since then I have seen several outstanding Asian films including “Village Of Doom” (1983), “A Touch Of Sin” (2013), “Crickets” (2006), “The Boxer’s Omen” (1983), “Nobody Knows” (2004) and “Hope” (2013). If this is your first time watching Asian cinema skip “The Wailing” and watch one of the films I just mentioned. “The Wailing” gets 1 star from me.
I’ve been wanting to watch this movie for so long but couldn’t find in any websites . However, now that i have watched it i think it is a really good movie. Some might think that it is long and boring but i think it’s the thing that makes the movie interesting too. Some may be confused about who is the villain and draw their own conclusions. I also have my own conclusion about the movie. It was really hard to figure out who the villain is but i guess the Japanese man/demon is the one and the male shaman is with him. I may not be sure but i guess the woman in white is the one trying to save the small girl. The confusion of the police man and his anxious nature made us confused too.
Great film, thoroughly enjoyed this.
Too long and plodding. Honestly, by the end of the movie I couldn’t care less who was behind it all. I simply wanted this movie to just end already. 2 out of 5 stars. 1 star if it weren’t for the visuals and camerawork.

A fantastic horror film imo. Seen it a few times now, and still find myself telling him to stay until the third cock crow. A film that takes the time to develop its characters, so you have an emotional investment into the family making for a serious but sad pay off. 4.5 / 5 hair pins.
Eh the poor acting really threw me off… I couldn’t take those lil korean people seriously, Man no wonder these guys never win any wars…. or produce any good athletes… they can do math i guess.. anyway people praise this movie a bit too much for whats it worth.

Here’s an unpopular opinion. This movie is slow, long and boring.., it continues to languish till the end, really loud one-brain@shared-brain characters, I kept on adjusting the screen brightness and squinting my eyes to make out “what the fucks are going on” in the constant, deliberate, dark lighting… the twists are a total cop-out… Wasted my time watching this and the only consolation is that, I can now form an honest opinion about it.
