Plot – Spoilers:
A Japanese AV star Mai Tsurumi – who stood out in the clutter of her industry – went missing a few years back. Tsurumi had earned fans for her contrasting elegance while performing in niche fetishes like menstrual porn.
Now a couple years later, a female journalist and her crew are making a documentary on the missing actress. Their interest in her case is mostly based on a rumour that Tsurumi disappeared into a snuff film that was later sent to her studio.
Celluloid Nightmares with its tight running time of just over an hour is a gripping watch despite you having probably watched plenty from the genre, including Daisuke Yamanouchi’s other works.
The TL;DR: It’s ok when it should have been more. Bland. It’s a decent film to share with those who aren’t highly desensitized. This one was a little disappointing for me, given the hype I’ve heard about it. It wasn’t a bad film by any means. In fact, there are many great qualities about it: The script feels exactly like the 90s. Every journalist spoke with this same vocabulary and cadence back then. The score is classic 90s public TV, too. The actors delivered their lines in a believable, natural manner throughout the film. The pacing of the film felt perfect to me. There’s a fair amount of blood, and said blood is used in a way that simulates reality (with the exception of the classic Japanese Red Mist used in one scene). However, I feel like this is also a bit of a weakness, too. 99% of their special effects were blood. The other 1% was a bloody… something that did not remotely resemble what it was supposed to be. All of that said, that’s as far as my praise goes. It’s just an episode of 60 Minutes Unrated. It’s just bland somehow, despite all of its greatness. And the twist. Yeah, it twisted, but why? It was a very unnecessary twist that actually subtracted a substantial amount of the film’s scarce luster. A classic. Hoping Massacre Video releases this as a standalone so I don’t have to break down and purchase the Yamanouchi subscription.
Fun and cool and fun
Fantastic movie, I like this better than Shiraishi’s mockumentary films, and that’s saying something. Not going to lie though, I did see the twist coming.
Even if I knew from the comments that there was a twist in the end, it still got me. Nice one !
This movie was really interesting! I didn’t expect the ending at all, I was pleasantly surprised. I think what I really appreciate about this, is that it’s not TOTALLY mindless gore and sex just for the sake of…mindless gore and sex. There’s actually a good plot, and suspense. Really enjoyed it~

kept my attention the entire time. insane ending, wasn’t expecting it. i expected this movie to just be pure torture porn, but it surprised me. 3.5/5

Somehow Japanese women who are in adult industry look very decent and homei, as if they are going to bake a cake once they finish funking everyone in the movie.

Um…. Yeah, the world of menstrual porn is tough.
This is a great ad for the creation of Sex Workers’ Union. Porn bosses are notorious assholes and hey, a girl’s gotta make a living right? Union arbitration could have stopped this senseless and absurd atrocity.
Seriously though, this is a “fun” watch that despite everything about it, somehow keeps your interest for nearly an hour and 4 minuets.
