Country: Austria; Effed Up European Films

Runtime: 01:48:08
Genres: Family

About:
The Austrian master’s debut feature follows the seemingly mundane daily life of an Austrian family over 3 years as they slowly take halting steps up the expected social ladder. Only for life to turn realistic – you can plan and put in so much effort into the future, and then for no apparent reason, completely change your mind and decide to go in a completely different direction.

The Seventh Continent is an oddly satisfying film with long oddly satisfying sequences, made long before that was a youtube thing.

Dear Lord, make me meek,
So that I in Heaven,
Shall Thee meet.

Such a dark and sad movie, but also very unique. Michael Haeneke has got some guts, that’s for sure!

I binge watched 11 Michael Haneke films yesterday and today. One of them was written by Haneke but not directed by him and it turned out to be my favorite one. It’s called “The Moor’s Head” (1995). It’s about an engineer who works in a science lab that hears about a toxic gas leak in the area and goes absolutely insane. You’ve never seen someone have as epic of a mental breakdown as this guy. It’s similar to “The Seventh Continent” but much more extreme.

One Haneke film that disappointed was “Time of the Wolf” (2003) starring Isabelle Hubbert. How can you go wrong with a post apocalyptic film directed by Haneke and starring Hubbert? They found a way. Rule #1 – If you are going to make a post apocalypse film, make sure that it at least reaches the benchmark set by the TV film “Threads” (1984) (or “Dead Man’s Letters (1986) available to view on this website) or don’t make it at all.

“Red, White & Blue” (2010) would be a great movie to put up on the 4th of July. This is not a request and that’s not an excuse. It’s an explanation.

I’m up for something new, but an excess of the mundane in my life is the reason I watch movies. So, to watch a movie like this seems beyond absurd. I lasted about 10 minutes before I remembered some lint in my belly button that needs attention. The claustrophobic camera shots did me in.

The description didn’t mention anything about having English subtitles so I thought I was going to be out of luck but looks like it has them. Looking forward to watching this one.

I saw this a long time ago and I’ve been looking for it on the internet for a while with no luck. So glad to see it here on EUM. Very bizarre film with odd sequences like the gym students jumping over the wooden horse or the half eaten corn flake dinner scene. Some scenes last maybe a little too long which made me start to laugh at some points. It’s STRANGE! It goes right in to my top 10. 5 stars. Loved it.
